The **catch-up drill with a board** is one of the best teaching tools for beginner swimmers and something that I always make sure to teach my students— and here’s why 🏊‍♀️

When using a kickboard, the swimmer holds the board with one hand extended in front while the other arm performs a full freestyle stroke. The stroking hand then “catches up” to the board before the next arm begins. This setup simplifies the stroke and breaks it into clear, manageable steps.

Why it’s great for beginners:

**1️⃣ Teaches proper body position**
The board provides front support, helping swimmers feel what a long, stretched-out body line should feel like. Beginners often struggle with sinking hips — the board encourages forward balance and alignment.

**2️⃣ Slows the stroke down**
New swimmers tend to rush and windmill their arms. The catch-up motion forces patience and control, helping them understand timing instead of just moving fast.

**3️⃣ Builds stroke awareness**
By isolating one arm at a time, swimmers can focus on:

* Entering the water correctly
* Reaching forward
* Pulling under the body
* Finishing the stroke fully

It creates space to think about technique without being overwhelmed.

**4️⃣ Improves coordination**
Freestyle requires timing between arms, kick, and breathing. The board-supported catch-up drill simplifies the coordination pattern, making it easier to connect movements step by step.

**5️⃣ Boosts confidence**
The added stability of the board reduces anxiety, especially for beginners who are still developing comfort in the water. Feeling supported helps them focus on learning rather than just staying afloat.

In short: it builds balance, timing, control, and confidence — all foundational skills for a strong freestyle. 🌊
